Going Green: Our Environment
The City of Guelph is hosting its first information technology (IT) recycling event on Saturday, June 23 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre parking lot. A rain date has been set for Saturday, July 7.
Residents are invited to drop off information technology items, including computers and peripherals, cell phones, fax machines, printer cartridges and other IT items for recycling. All IT items dropped off at the event will be recycled by Greentec, a local recycling service provider that specializes in the recycling of electronic waste items.
Electronics and IT items are constantly being replaced with faster, more efficient technology. Environment Canada estimates that over 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste piles up in Canadian landfills each year.
“This recycling event represents one of the ways the City of Guelph will work to reduce the amount of IT waste that goes to landfill,” says Phil Zigby, Marketing and Procurement Officer for Solid Waste Resources. “This initiative also ensures that the electronic equipment is recycled responsibly, and any potentially harmful substances found in these items are disposed of properly.”
The City of Guelph hopes to offer additional IT waste recycling events in the future; information on IT recycling events will be made available online at www.guelph.ca/wetdry. In the meantime, the City encourages residents to watch for and take advantage of the IT and electronic waste retailer take-back and recycling programs that are currently available throughout the community.
For more information about the IT recycling event, including a complete list of acceptable IT items visit www.guelph.ca/wetdry or call 519-767-0598. This event is limited to Guelph residents only.
